Chapter Nine

The park at night was an eerie scene, Kieran decided as he arrived at the deserted playground where he and Sam had hung out as teenagers. The park was fairly large, considering they lived in such a small town, and the sectioned-off playground was on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. It had all changed over the last few years and now there was all new playground equipment. He remembered writing his and Sam’s names on the side of the old slide and drawing various pictures and doodles. He felt a bit bad about that now, defacing public property, but as a teenager he hadn’t given it a second thought. Kieran didn’t remember it ever being so cold up there back when they were kids, but then he supposed that kids usually didn’t feel the cold quite so much.

He was bundled up into his black, military-style jacket with a thick, red, wool scarf that Rita had knitted for him years ago. It was misshapen in the middle where she had accidentally added a few extras stitches by splitting the wool, and it was starting to fray at the ends, but he still wore it. His real mother had never cared enough to so much as look at him let alone spend weeks making him something to keep him warm. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets in an effort to keep them warm and sat himself down on one of the swings, using his feet to gently rock himself back and forth. He remembered what Joey had told him, that he could barely feel the cold and that werewolves were usually hot.

“Well that’s something to look forward to I guess, being a wolf,” he muttered to himself.

“That’s the first sign of madness, talking to yourself,” Sam’s familiar voice said from behind him, making him jump. Stealthy Sam, now that was something he was going to have to get used to.

“Really? I thought it was believing in werewolves and vampires,” Kieran retorted, smiling as he turned on his swing to see his foster brother. Sam came to sit on the swing next to his and he, too, began pushing himself gently back and forth with his feet, matching Kieran’s tempo.

“I’m glad you texted me, I was worried about you,” Sam confessed quietly.

“How much do you know?” Kieran asked carefully as he studied Sam’s pale face in the moonlight.

“I know that Joey is your mate, that you had sex and that he claimed you,” Sam informed him with an easy shrug.

“So, everything then,” Kieran lamented, leaning his head against the cold chain that was holding up his swing. “What do I do?”

Sam snorted and leaned back to look up at the night sky. “You stop caring about everyone else for a change and do what makes you happy.”

“That’s easier said than done,” Kieran pointed out. “Besides, I don’t know what will make me happy.”
